Upgrade your Herman Miller Aeron chair with our quick and easy guide. Transform the arm height adjustment mechanism from the outdated thumb wheel to the new, user-friendly flip knob edition. This tutorial provides all the necessary steps and tools you'll need to make the switch, enhancing your chair's functionality and your comfort.
Tools Needed:
- Flip Knob (Lever) Kit for Herman Miller Classic Aeron (Before 2004)
- Hex key (5mm) or hex head attachment
- Power drill (optional for efficiency)
Steps for Upgrade:
1) Remove the Chair's Back:
- Start by using a 5mm hex key or hex head attachment to unbolt the four bolts located on the backside of the chair.
- Carefully remove the chair's back and set it aside.
2) Prepare the Flip Knobs:
- Ensure you have two flip knobs, labeled 'L' for left and 'R' for right, to replace both sides.
- For this tutorial, we will demonstrate the process on the left arm. The same steps apply to the right arm.
3) Remove Old Thumb Wheel:
- Unbolt the old thumb wheel while applying pressure to prevent it from spinning. This will help in detaching it easily.
- Discard the old thumb wheel as it is no longer needed.
4) Install the New Flip Knob:
- Take the new flip knob and insert the bolt, nut, and washer into it. Note the unique shape of the nut that fits only in a specific orientation.
- Support the nut from the back with your finger and use the plastic part to rotate and align the nut.
- Slide the flip knob into the swing arm and connect the plastic part until you hear a click, ensuring it's properly aligned and fitted.
5) Connect the Arm Swing to the Arm Yoke:
- Use the provided bolt to connect the arm swing to the arm yoke.
- Tighten the bolt gently to allow for easy adjustment of the flip knob without making it too tight.
Conclusion:
By following these steps, you've successfully upgraded from an old thumb wheel to a new flip knob for arm height adjustment, enhancing the functionality and ease of use of your Aeron chair.
